NICC Graphic Design Students Win ADDY Awards
Posted 17 March 2010
Two Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) graphic design students received ADDY Awards for their work in a design competition last month. The students accepted their awards on Friday, Feb. 26, at the annual ADDY Awards Ceremony, which was held locally at the Hotel Julien in Dubuque. The ADDY competition offers local graphic designers opportunities to enter their works in a multitude of categories.

Ashley Hosch, of Epworth, earned a gold medal in the Poster category for “Anatomy of Type.” Hosch’s “Anatomy of Type” displays different characteristics of typography in graphic form. She is the daughter of Dave and Mary Hosch, and will be graduating from the NICC Graphic Design program in May 2010.

Kevin M. Schuster received two silver ADDY awards, one for his “Smooth Finish Menu” in the Point of Purchase category, and a second in the Packaging category for "Solar Foods Breakfast Blastoff." Schuster completed the award-wining works as part of his graphic design studies at NICC. Schuster lives in Peosta.

Hosch and Schuster completed against many other graphic design students from four-year colleges and universities, including Loras College, Clarke College and the University of Iowa. Advertising professionals from outside the Dubuque area judged the artworks. Hosch and Schuster now qualify to move to district competition.

NICC Graphic Design instructor Carla Heathcote teaches Hosch and Schuster. The honors for their work are especially fitting, she said. “Both Ashley and Kevin bring a unique vision and creative flair to their design work. They create work that visually intrigues the viewer and keeps the viewer engaged, wanting to discover more,” said Heathcote. “Of equal importance is their professionalism: both Ashley and Kevin pay keen attention to detail and always get things done within the allotted time frame. These are absolute musts if one wants to be employed as a graphic designer,” she said.
