Prescott
Music Program and Students Selected to Present at National Educators
Conference
Posted 23 February
2010
Prescott Elementary School’s steel drum ensemble, Pandemonium, has been
invited to perform and provide a demonstration at the national
Expeditionary Learning conference in Kansas City, MO on Friday,
February 26, 2010. The conference will be held at the Westin
Crown Center convention center in downtown Kansas City.
The conference is sponsored by Outward Bound, a national non-profit
organization that specializes in educating educators about
expeditionary learning.
Prescott Elementary School uses an arts-infused curriculum that is
built on expeditionary learning principles, and is one of few fine arts
magnet elementary schools. The group and their teachers will
present a two-hour master class for conference attendees.
Pandemonium is one of two steel drum ensembles sponsored by the Colts
and based at Prescott. This is the first year of Pandemonium,
which is designed for middle school students. Most of the
students started on steel drums as elementary students as members of
PanRhythmiX, the original ensemble formed in 2004. The steel
drums are also used as part of the general music curriculum at Prescott.
The steel drum ensembles are sponsored by the Colts in support the fine
arts magnet curriculum at Prescott. The Colts also sponsor Vocal
Fusion, an after school singing and movement ensemble.
“This invitation reflects the truly national recognition the Prescott
programs are receiving, and is a testament to the quality of the
instruction and programming that is being provided for these students,”
said Greg Orwoll, Colts Executive Director. “We are proud
of our contributions to the success of Prescott and the students who
participate.”
The Colts are underwriting the cost of the trip, including meals,
transportation, the hotel and other expenses.
In addition to the performance for the convention, the trip will
include a clinic and campus tour at Central College in Pella, Iowa.
The steel drum ensembles at Prescott are taught by Patti Millius and
Deb Stevens.
