Poor
Working Conditions Persist at Agriprocessors
Posted 2 July 2008
More than a dozen current and former employees reported last week that
poor working conditions continue to persist at Postville Agriprocessor
meat processing plant.
The plant, which is the nation's largest kosher
meat-processing plant, also holds the distinction of being the site for
the nation's largest single-site immigration raid in U.S. history. The
action in May 2008 forced hundreds to leave their job, and the
Postville community. Many face charges and deportation.
Complaints against Agriprocessors include low regard to employee
safety, low wages and high employee turnover. Workers say little has
been done since May to improve working conditions.
Agriprocessors spokesman Chaim Abrahams says the company has taken
steps to ensure it complies with all state and federal laws. Last week,
June 26 and 27, Abrahams reported a workplace safety compliance expert
toured the facility and reviewed its practices.
