FEMA
to Open Recovery Center in Manchester
Posted 28 June 2008
FEMA announced yesterday, Friday, June 27, that they will be opening a
Disaster Recovery Center in Delaware County for those residents
affected by the recent floods, storms or tornadoes.
The center will be located at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in
Manchester. It will be open only next week Monday through Thursday from
10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
Many support agencies will be at the Delaware County Disaster Recovery
Center for people to talk to--including Operation New View, the Food
Pantry, Delaware County Public Health, Backbone Area Counseling, Iowa
Workforce Development, Rural Development, Scenic Valley Agency on
Aging, Department of Human Services, Delaware County Community Services
and the Delaware County Long Term Recovery Committee. FEMA and SBA
representatives will also be on hand.
Residents should make sure they have registered with FEMA before going
to the center. They can do so by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY
1-800-462-7585 for the hearing- or speech-impaired. The lines are open
8 a.m. to 6 p.m., daily.
Residents from other counties can also attend the Delaware County
Disaster Recovery Center, especially since the FEMA centers in
Buchanan, Fayette and Clayton County will be closed next week.
It is important for individuals to visit the center as soon as possible
so that FEMA can move to other disaster sites in the State to help
others. For more information call 245-2098.
Those affected by the storms can also register online at
http://www.fema.gov/ or visit a DRC to meet with recovery specialists.
Registering before visiting a DRC will shorten time spent at the
center. Visiting a DRC is not required to be considered for assistance.
Representatives of state, federal, voluntary agencies and the U.S.
Small Business Administration will be available to answer questions and
provide recovery information. Written materials about various
assistance programs are also available to individuals and business
owners. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at
DRCs. Centers are for the dissemination of information to assist in
disaster recovery.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for,
preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering
from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including
acts of terrorism.
