Portions of Heritage Trail Remain Closed
Posted 27 June 2008
Despite many signs and barricades, recreational users of the Heritage Trail continue to use unsafe portions of the trail. Sections of the trail were tremendously damaged by recent storms and flooding and users should heed the warnings.
According to the Dubuque County Conservation Department, "Road Closed" signs block all but six of the 26 miles of trail for good reason.

One section of the popular trail has collapsed into the river and officials say the remainder of the trail could give way at any time and seriously injure or kill a trail user before necessary repairs are made.

Fixing the extensive trail damage may cost upwards of $2 million and the department anticipates it may take at least a year to complete.

Dubuque County Conservation says the Heritage Trail is now open from Farley to Dyersville and users can expect the trail from the Ponds to Clay Hill Road to be open by this weekend. The Heritage Trail from Clay Hill Road to Durango is expected to reopen for public use by the end of next week.
